Learning A Radically Lexical Grammar
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a prototype system which induces a categorial grammar from a simple text corpus of children's reading books. Unlike previous attempts at grammar induction, (I) there are no rules of grammar, only a richly structured lexicon; (2) we rely both on an informing linguistic theory and on statistical methods applied to a corpus. 1 I n t r o d u c t i o n L e a r n i n g a

The two be's of English
This qualitative study investigates the uses of be in Contemporary English. Based on this study, one easy claim and one more difficult claim are proposed. The easy claim is that the traditional distinction between be as a lexical verb and be as an auxiliary is faulty. In particular, 'copular-be', traditionally considered to be a lexical verb, is in fact a prototypi...
متن کاملTowards a More Lexical and Functional Type-logical Theory of Grammar
Type-Logical Lexical Functional Grammar is a new, radically lexicalist, and formally parsimonious theory, in essence a re-incarnation of Lexical Functional Grammar (Kaplan and Bresnan, 1982) in a type-logical formal framework very similar in formal nature to that of Type-Logical Categorial Grammar (Morrill, 1994; Moortgat, 1997). It puts emphasis on having a simple logical foundation as its for...
متن کاملA Correlational Study of Expectancy Grammar’s Manifestation on Cloze Test and Lexical Collocational Density
The notion of expectancy grammar as a key to understanding the nature of psychologically real processes that underlie language use is introduced by Oller (1979). A central issue in this notion is that expectancy generating systems are constructed and modified in the course of language acquisition. Thus, one of the characteristics of language proficiency is that it consists of such an expectancy...
متن کاملLearning in the Lexical-Grammatical Interface
Children are facile at both discovering word boundaries and using those words to build higher-level structures in tandem. Current research treats lexical acquisition and grammar induction as two distinct tasks. Doing so has led to unreasonable assumptions. Existing work in grammar induction presupposes a perfectly segmented, noise-free lexicon, while lexical learning approaches largely ignore h...
متن کاملThe language-specific nature of grammatical development: evidence from bilingual language learners.
The fact that early lexical and grammatical acquisition are strongly correlated has been cited as evidence against the view that the language faculty is composed of dissociable and autonomous modules (Bates & Goodman, 1997). However, previous studies have not yet eliminated the possibility that lexical-grammar associations may be attributable to language-general individual differences (e.g. chi...
